I couldn't think of a good pre-cut quote, so here is a moment of LOLWUT from this episode
The plot is pretty good and some interesting concepts are explored, in terms of information control and the power of information. Humans tendency to be a bit like sheep and all of that. I like it when RTD tries to tackle big themes and issues. The entire premise revolves around an evil government that is able to control the people via controlling information.
The Editor: Create a climate of fear and it's easy to keep the borders closed. It's just a matter of emphasis. The right word in the right broadcast repeated often enough can destabilize an economy, invent an enemy, change a vote.
LOL. How ~topical, RTD. This was aired in 2005, and that line does a lot to reflect the political climate at the time, in terms of Iraq and the media, etc.
The Editor: Now there's an interesting point. Is a slave a slave if he doesn't know he's enslaved?
The Doctor: Yes.
The Editor: Aw. I was hoping for a philosophical debate, is that all I'm gonna get: "yes"?
The Doctor: Yes.
The Editor: You're no fun.
The Doctor: Let me out of these manacles and I'll show you how much fun I am.
The Editor: Ooh, he's tough isn't he?
The Doctor: [to Adam] The thing is, Adam, time travel is like visiting Paris. You can't just read the guide book. You've got to throw yourself in, eat the food, use the wrong verbs, get charged double and end up kissing complete strangers - or is that just me? Stop asking questions. Go and do it!
I like that this is the Doctor’s philosophy behind time travel, and Rose totally subscribes to this. See also: Rose in “The Unquiet Dead”, “The Idiot’s Lantern” and “New Earth”. It’s why I love her.
I do appreciate the point that Adam is supposed to show that not everyone can be a Companion, but I feel like it comes off a bit forced and clunky. Idk. Like “look at how awesome Rose is! And how much Adam sucks!”. Don’t get me wrong, I do think Rose is awesome, but in this episode, it just seems a bit over the top. It also comes up when Rose is compared to Cathica. Rose is asking the right questions. I mean, she actually is very good at asking the right questions (see also: The Idiot's Lantern), but it just feels like RTD is trying too hard to show us how awesome Rose is when I don't think it's necessary. Rose could have just asked the intelligent question. I don't think we needed the Doctor pointing out that Rose is awesome.
Adam: But I want to come with you!
The Doctor: I only take the best, I've got Rose.
And of course that bit at the end where Adam's mom snaps her fingers makes me giggle every time.
Also, I love that Simon Pegg is in this. Simon Pegg!!! ILU.
