2x01 New Earth
2x01 – “New Earth”
Grade: A-

(Yes, you're getting another one today. Mostly because I love this episode and didn't want to wait to rewatch it. Also DNW to study for midterms.)

Who needs arms, when we have claws?

I am not even going to lie. The reason I love this episode so much is CAT NUNS. NUNS WHO ARE ALSO CATS. I’m sorry, but this is like my favorite thing ever, so I kind of have to love this episode. Seriously though, this is a really fun episode. It's one of those episodes that I'll watch to cheer myself up. I love it a lot.

The plot in this episode is pretty good, actually. The idea of using human clones to do scientific experiments on in order to cure diseases is really interesting, to me. I mean the curing of the diseases and the fact that it can all be passed on by touch is a little shaky as far as logic goes, but I still really enjoy this episode a lot.

Other than that, Cassandra really makes the episode. She’s hilarious at times (taking over the Doctor’s body) and villainous at others (stealing Rose’s body! Letting all the human clones go!). But most importantly, she has a nice humanizing arc. Also, Billie and David are also clearly having tons of fun pretending to be Cassandra. The “old Earth Cockney” that Cassandra in Rose’s body does is super funny. It’s just a mega fun episode.

Cassandra (in Rose's body): God, she's with the Doctor. That man, he's the Doctor. The same Doctor with a new face! That hypocrite!
[in an undertone]
Cassandra (in Rose's body): I must get the name of his surgeon.

Cassandra (in Rose's body): [voice high, sounds distressed] Look at me. From class to brass.
[after a moment's consideration]
Cassandra (in Rose's body): Although...
[studying Rose's body]
Cassandra (in Rose's body): Ooh. Curves.
[bounces up and down]
Cassandra (in Rose's body): Oh Baby!
[Chip's now bouncing with her; Cassandra sounds excited]
Cassandra (in Rose's body): It's like living inside a bouncy castle!

Cassandra (in the Doctor's body): Well... this is... different...
Rose: Cassandra?
Cassandra (in the Doctor's body): Goodness me, I'm a man. Yum. So many parts. And hardly used.
[starts jerking around]
Cassandra (in the Doctor's body): Ah, ah! Two hearts! Oh baby, I'm beating out a samba!
Rose: Get out of him!
Cassandra (in the Doctor's body): Ooh, he's slim... and a little bit foxy. You thought so too; I've been inside your head. You've been looking. You *like* it.

Cassandra really is extremely funny throughout this episode. She was a great character in series 1, and I'm so glad they brought her back. She added a really fun tone to the first episode of the new series, but she also provided a nice little character growth arc.

Cassandra (in Rose’s body): Inside her head…. They’re so alone. They keep reaching out, just to hold us. All their lives, they’ve never been touched.

It’s a nice humanizing moment for Cassandra, to turn her from her evil ways. Haha. Anyway, I think it’s part of what gives her perspective enough to die with some modicum of dignity in the end.

Oh and can we take a moment to lol at Rose’s hat from the very beginning of the episode (which she ditches the second she gets into the Tardis. Smart girl. My theory is that Jackie knitted it for her, so she had to keep it on while Jackie was watching, but ditched it the first chance she got)?

Another highlight of this episode is how adorable the Doctor and Rose are. Part of the reason why I love Rose and Ten is that you can tell that Billie and David genuinely like each other and enjoy spending time together and that comes across on screen. And they’ve remained friends, years after they finished filming, David went to Billie’s wedding and sometimes in interviews they’ll mention talking to the other.

Rose: Oh, I love this! Can I just say, traveling with you... I love it.
The Doctor: Me too.

The Doctor: So the year five billion, the sun expands, the earth gets roasted...
Rose: That was our first date.
The Doctor: We had chips!

They're so adorkable. I love that they essentially spend the first 5 minutes of this episode just grinning at each other like the dorks that they are.

The Doctor: Hold on. I can understand the bodies. I can understand your vows. The one thing I can’t understand. What have you done to Rose?
Novice Haine: I don’t know what you mean.
The Doctor: I’m being very, very calm. I want you to be aware of that. Very, very calm. And the only reason I’m being so very, very calm is the brain is a delicate thing. Whatever you’ve done to Rose’s head, I want it reversed.
Novice Haine: We haven’t done anything.
Cassandra (in Rose’s body): I’m perfectly fine.
The Doctor: These people are dying and Rose would care.

I love that that’s how the Doctor figures out that something is wrong with Rose. It’s not the weird accent. It’s not that she kisses him. It’s that she would care about the humans that are being experimented on.

Oh and of course. The Kiss. Excuse me while I put on my tin hat of batshit crazy shipping for just a moment.

Cassandra (in Rose's body): [unaware Cassandra is inhabiting Rose's body; the Doctor questioned the nurses' secrecy on their miracle medicine] I can't Adam and Eve it.
The Doctor: What... What's with the voice?
Cassandra (in Rose's body): Oh, I don't know, just larking about. New Earth. New me.
The Doctor: Well, I can talk. New new Doctor.
[smiles]
Cassandra (in Rose's body): Mmm, aren't you just?
[kisses The Doctor]
Cassandra (in Rose's body): T-ter-terminal's this way.
[walks away, fanning her face as if warm]
The Doctor: [looks at her, disoriented; finally, in squeaky voice] Yep. Still got it.

Ok, now obviously this isn’t ROSE and the Doctor kissing. But the Doctor doesn’t freak out the way one might if a friend (who he had no romantic feelings for) kissed him. As far as he knows, she’s still Rose, and yet his response is to look dazed and say “Yep. Still got it.” *takes off tin hat*

… Now in the world of the more sane people, we can still flail over the way that the Doctor looks at Rose when he catches her after Cassandra goes into Chip.

:D Look at them grinning at each other. They're always just so happy to be in each other's presence. Clearly the Doctor considers this a moment where he was close to Rose because its what he flashes back to during "The Runway Bride". Anyway, it's a nice little moment.

And as a final note, let’s just take another minute to lol. This time at Jack!Face of Boe. LMAO. Oh Uncle Rusty, sometimes I really do believe that you were smoking crack.

DUDE. Thank you for telling me to watch this episode. CAT NUNS. NUNS THAT ARE CATS. They were actually surprisingly realistic and almost not funny. And then the Head Nun of Doom did that claw thing and I just about lost it XDDD

Also Cassandra in the Doctor's body was the funniest thing I've seen all week!

I KNOW, RIGHT? This episode isn't one people generally list as one of their favorites, but I LOVE it. It just cheers me up. I really do think it's a great episode. And both Billie Piper and David Tennant are so hilarious and great in it as Rose and the Doctor and as Cassandra. <3

YES! I looove this episode soo much. I can't tell you how many times I've watched it. They're just so familiar and adorable with each other. When they're standing outside the tardis and the wind is blowing so hard that The Doctor can't get his coat on, and Rose has to help him out. Precious. They are most definitely my favorite fictional couple ever.
